James Van Loon

James Van Loon is the Director General of Health Canada’s Tobacco Control Directorate. He has led the development and implementation of Canada’s Tobacco Strategy since 2017.

James has been working in environment and health-related public policy for over 20 years. He has held various leadership positions at both Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada. Most recently, he held the position of Director General of Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Directorate. In addition to Tobacco and Consumer Products, he has significant experience in toxic substances management, drinking water protection, and environmental assessment.

James holds a master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University in Toronto and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from McGill University in Montreal.
